José Salomon Del medico left Portugal and changed his name to Yosef Shelomo Rofe. Studied in Padoua and Venice. From a family of Doctors practised in Cairo, was the doctor of the princes Radziwil of Poland, thought medicine in Frankfurt and died 1655 in Prague. His descendants were mainly doctors with the family names Rofe and Altabef which is translation of Medico to Hebrew and Arabic.
Of the Mendes family, Fernando Mendes was in 1669 the doctor of the court of England. Antonio Mendes was the doctor of Queen Katherine of Braganza of Portugal. This family gave famous doctors through the generations. During the Second World War Dr Guido Mendes was the Doctor of the Pope, and this saved him from the Nazis and brought him to Israel. We thus come to the biography of Dr Garcia de Orta, born in 1500 in Castelo de Vide in Portugal, Studied in Salamanca and in Alcala de Henares. themselves from the Inquisition. During his life he was not persecuted
by the Inquisition. After his death in 1568, was condemned, his body taken
out of its grave and thrown into the sea. His sisters burned alive at the
stake in the principal square of Goa.
