A few months ago, two of our congregants bought and donated two Sifrei Torah to our Kehila. The existing Aron Hakodesh which we had, proved now to be too small to accommodate the extra Torahs, so through the generous donation of "Gigi" Benzakein and Samuel Angel the Aron Hakodesh was rebuilt and on December 11, 2001. The Consecration and Dedication ceremony took place at the Sephardi Hebrew Congregation. The Kehila was filled to capacity with congregants and invited guests, including many Rabbis from other Synagogues, who attended. The Sifrei Torahs were fetched from Rabbi Suiza's home, and many people lined the street to the Kehila to watch the two Congregants carry their beautiful Torahs [namely our present Chairman Mr. Shlomo Mazor, and Mr. Alon Saban]. People danced in the street to the sound of a superb "Klezmer band" and this is how the Torahs were heralded into the Shul.
The Chairman, Mr. Shlomo Mazor, spoke movingly about the wonderful commencement of the founding of the Kehila, by the Honourary Life President Mr Moise Israel and the Late Honourary Life President, Mr. Joseph Rahmani who together with several other prominent members were instrumental in establishing our present Kehila. Our wonderful Rabbi, started services in our Kehila in 1981 and today Rabbi Ruben Suiza is a Dayan on the Cape Town Beth Din and is highly revered by Sephardi and Ashkenazi communities. He officiates at many weddings, Brit Milahs etc and holds the most interesting Shiurim. Martine Israël
